Day 02: Thimphu Sightseeing

Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, is a unique blend of modernity and tradition, where commerce, religion, and government intersect. The city is known for being the only capital in the world without traffic lights, with officers managing traffic during peak hours. Despite its modern amenities, including restaurants, shopping centers, and internet cafes, Thimphu retains its rich cultural heritage.

Begin the day with a visit to the Buddha Dordenma statue, located in Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park, offers panoramic views of Thimphu valley.

  • National Memorial Chorten

Then, head to the National Memorial Chorten, built in the memory of the Third King of Bhutan, this temple is an iconic monument where visitors often see Bhutanese people circumambulating. It honors the king, regarded as the father of modern Bhutan and the temple is dedicated for the world peace.

  • Folk Heritage Museum

Established in 2001, this museum offers insights into Bhutanese culture, offering a glimpse of how people lived in remote areas of the country.

  • School of Arts and Crafts

The School of Arts and Crafts is another stop, where students master 13 traditional Bhutanese art techniques. You can witness live carvings, paintings, and sculptures. The school’s products are also available for sale.

  • Textile Museum

Visit the Textile Museum Opened in 2001, this museum showcases Bhutan’s weaving traditions, with exhibitions on weaving techniques, local dress styles, and textiles made by men and women. Items for sale are labeled with the weaver’s name and price.

  • Archery Matches at Changlimithang

Bhutan’s national sport, archery, is a thrilling experience to witness archery matches at Changlimithang, hitting targets from an impressive distance of 145 meters.

Day 03: Thimphu to Punakha (2-hour drive)

In the morning, embark on a scenic drive to Punakha, the former capital of Bhutan until the reign of the second king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Punakha, with its warm climate and rich history, is a perfect blend of nature, culture, and spirituality.

  • Dochula Pass

Stop at the picturesque Dochula Pass, offering stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the snowcapped Himalayan ranges. The pass is adorned with 108 chortens, known as Druk Wangyal Chortens, which add to its serene and spiritual ambiance. This is an ideal spot for photography and quiet reflection.

  • Chimi Lhakhang (The Temple of Fertility)

Just a few kilometers below Dochula lies Chimi Lhakhang, a temple built in 1499 to honor Drukpa Kuenley, popularly known as The Divine Madman. Renowned for his unorthodox and playful methods of teaching Buddhism, he is celebrated for his use of humor and sexual symbolism. Couples from around the world visit this temple to pray for fertility and blessings. The short hike through the rice fields and charming village of Mesina offers a delightful rural experience.

After lunch, continue your exploration:

  • Punakha Dzong: Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, an architectural masterpiece built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Also known as Druk Pungthang Dechen Phodrang (Palace of Great Happiness), it is strategically located at the confluence of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers. The dzong served as the seat of government until the mid-20th century and remains the winter residence of the Je Khenpo (chief abbot). Its intricate woodwork, grand courtyards, and rich history make it one of Bhutan’s finest and most photogenic dzongs.
  • Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Monastery: Embark on a gentle hike to the beautiful Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Monastery, built by Her Majesty Queen Mother Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck. The monastery, perched on a hill, offers panoramic views of the lush Punakha valley and is an exquisite example of Bhutanese architecture and art.

In the evening, enjoy a leisurely walk across Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge (160m), which spans the Pho Chu River. The bridge offers stunning views of the Punakha valley, terraced fields, and flowing rivers, making it a memorable experience.

Day 04: Punakha to Bumthang (7-8 hours’ drive)

The journey to Bumthang offers a smooth drive through newly constructed roads, though some stretches are still under maintenance. Enjoy breathtaking landscapes, rich flora and fauna, snowcapped mountains, and iconic Buddhist monasteries as you pass through diverse regions with unique dialects, dress, and lifestyle. The route crosses Wangdue, Trongsa, and two high passes before reaching Bumthang.

Highlights Along the Way:

  • Chendebji Chorten: A stupa built in Nepalese style at 2,430m, constructed to subdue harmful demons, as per the prophecy of the second Gangteng Tulku.
  • Trongsa Dzong: The largest fortress in Bhutan, perched above the Mangde Chhu River. It played a pivotal role in Bhutan’s history and is associated with the Wangchuk dynasty.
  • Trongsa Ta Dzong (Museum): A watchtower built in 1652, now housing the Royal Heritage Museum, showcasing Buddhist art and royal memorabilia.
  • Yotongla Pass (3,400m): A mist-covered pass adorned with prayer flags, offering a scenic photo stop.
  • Yatha Wool Weaving Center: Famous for woolen products like jackets, caps, and scarves made from yak hair and sheep wool.

Final Stop: Visit the Jakar Dzong, known as the “White Bird Fortress,” which dominates the Chamkhar Valley and overlooks the town.

Day 05: Bumthang Sightseeing

Bumthang, the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, is known for its ancient temples, monasteries, and vibrant woolen textiles called Yathra. The district comprises four scenic valleys and offers a glimpse into Bhutan’s deep cultural heritage.

Highlights:

  • Jampay Lhakhang: One of Bhutan’s oldest temples, built in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. Known for the annual “naked dance,” this temple holds significant historical and spiritual importance.
  • Kurjey Lhakhang: Famous for the rock imprint of Guru Padmasambhava’s body, this site is admired for its artistic and architectural beauty.
  • Kharchu Dratsang Monastery: Experience the serene atmosphere as monks chant mantras in this monastery dedicated to preserving Bhutanese culture and traditions.
  • Tamzing Lhakhang: Founded in 1501 by Pema Lingpa, this temple features historically significant murals and is one of the valley’s oldest religious sites.
  • Swiss Cheese Farm & Red Panda Brewery: Established by Swiss settler Fritz Maurer, this project introduced brewing and farming innovations. Visitors can sample Swiss cheese and Bhutan’s only native beer, Red Panda.

Day 06: Bumthang to Gangtey and Phobjikha Valley

In the morning, drive to the serene and picturesque Gangtey and Phobjikha Valley, two of Bhutan’s most stunning destinations.

  • Wangdue Phodrang Dzong (En Route): Make a brief stop to admire the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, perched on a ridge overlooking the convergence of the Punakha and Dang Chu rivers. Though partially damaged by fire, the dzong retains its historic significance and is an important landmark in the region.

Note: The valley is divided into two parts—the upper region known as Gangtey and the lower region called Phobjikha.

  • Gangtey Monastery (Gangtey Gompa): Visit the iconic Gangtey Gompa monastery, perched on a hilltop with panoramic views of the scenic Phobjikha Valley. Built in 1613 by Gyaltse Pema Thinley, this monastery is one of the most important Nyingmapa monasteries in Bhutan. Every winter, the Black-Necked Crane Festival is held here to celebrate the arrival of the rare and sacred, black-necked cranes.
  • Crane Information Center: Explore the Crane Information Center, which provides fascinating insights into the migratory, black-necked cranes that visit the valley from Tibet during the winter months. The center features educational exhibits, videos, and a viewing area where you can observe these majestic birds in their natural habitat.

In the evening, take a leisurely walk through the beautiful Phobjikha Valley, surrounded by sweeping meadows, pristine forests, and traditional Bhutanese villages. The valley’s peaceful ambiance and unspoiled beauty make it an ideal place for relaxation and reflection. Keep an eye out for black-necked cranes if visiting during the winter season.

 Day 07: Phobjikha to Paro (5-hour drive)

Bid farewell to the “Asian Switzerland” as you retrace your journey to Paro via Pelela Pass, Wangdue, Dochula, and Chuzom. The scenic drive offers another chance to marvel at the majestic snowcapped Himalayan peaks.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Paro Dzong (Fortress on a Heap of Jewels): Built in 1644 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, this 17th-century architectural marvel serves as Paro’s administrative center. Its massive, buttressed walls dominate the valley and are particularly striking when landing at Paro Airport.
  • Ta Dzong (National Museum): Originally a 1649 watchtower for Paro Dzong, it was renovated in 1968 to house Bhutan’s National Museum. It showcases an impressive collection of historical artifacts, making it a must-visit.
  • Explore Paro Town:
    Despite its small size, Paro town offers a range of attractions, including authentic handicraft shops, Bhutan-made products, imported garments, grocery stores, and cozy restaurants.

Day 08: Tiger’s Nest Hiking and Paro Sightseeing

Paro, a picturesque valley adorned with fertile rice fields and a crystalline river, is a hub of historical landmarks, luxury resorts, and souvenir shops. The region is home to Bhutan’s most famous attraction, Taktsang Monastery, among other cultural treasures.

Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest)

Perched dramatically on a cliff 900 meters above the valley, this iconic Buddhist site is Bhutan’s most sacred landmark. The challenging hike to the monastery takes about two hours for experienced trekkers, while most visitors spend the whole day completing the journey.

Kyichu Lhakhang

Known as the “Jewel of Bhutan,” this temple was established by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo to subdue a giant ogress (mythical or supernatural female being) hindering the spread of Buddhism. It is one of 108 temples built overnight, with Kyichu Lhakhang symbolizing the ogress’s left foot. Originally small, it was later expanded into its present grand form.

Hot Stone Bath with Dinner at a Farmhouse

A traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath offers therapeutic benefits for body aches and joint pain. The wooden bathtubs, set in private huts, provide a unique and relaxing experience for couples. This activity is available at an additional cost; arrangements can be made with your guide or driver.

 Day 09: Paro Sightseeing
Paro, home to Bhutan’s only international airport, is a fertile valley producing the locally famous red rice. It enjoys pleasant weather year-round and is renowned for the sacred Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) monastery.

  • Dzongdrakha Temples: Known as the “Mini Taktsang,” these cliffside temples near Bondey village offer scenic hikes and are a must-visit for curious travelers.
  • Chelela Pass (3988m): The highest motorable road pass in Bhutan, connecting Paro and Haa. On clear days, it offers stunning views of Mt. Jomolhari (7314m) and is adorned with colorful prayer flags. Enjoy nature walks or a 36–48 km downhill mountain biking ride to Paro Valley.
  • Kila Gompa Nunnery: Perched on a cliff, this peaceful nunnery houses about 100 nuns, seven temples, and several residential buildings. The hike from Chelela Pass takes about 40 minutes and rewards visitors with breathtaking views of Paro, Jele Dzong, and, on clear days, Mt. Jomolhari and Jichu Drake.

Day 10: End of the Tour

  • Cancellations must be communicated in writing.
  • Cancellation fees:
    • If the cancellation is before 45 days: 90% shall be refunded. Wire transfer charges shall be applicable as per the Bank.
    • If the cancellation is between 30-45 days: 75% shall be refunded. Wire transfer charges shall be applicable as per the Bank.
    • If the cancellation is between 20-30 days: 50% shall be refunded. Wire transfer charges shall be applicable as per the Bank.
    • If the cancellation is less than 20 days:  No refund, however date change request shall be permitted.
  1. Emergency Tour Cancellation Policy

At Echoes Tours & Travels, we understand that unforeseen emergencies can disrupt even the most well-planned trips. To accommodate such situations, we have established the following policy:

  • Definition of Emergency

An emergency is defined as an unavoidable and unforeseen circumstance that prevents travel. This may include:

  • Medical emergencies involving the traveler or immediate family.
  • Natural disasters affect the traveler’s location or destination.
  • Death in the immediate family.
  • Government-issued travel bans or restrictions.
  • Notification of Cancellation

Travelers must notify us as soon as possible in case of an emergency. Notification can be made through:

To process an emergency cancellation, supporting documentation must be provided, such as:

  • Medical certificate or hospital records.
  • Death certificate.

In case of a death in the family, we require a cancellation email and a copy of the death certificate to process the refund.

  • Land Services: A 100% refund will be provided, minus applicable bank transfer charges.
  • No Show: Refunds are not possible for no-shows after arrival.

Similarly, in case of serious illness or accidents, we require a cancellation email and hospital medical documents for verification to process the refund.

  • Early Departure Due to Unavoidable Circumstances:
  • If a guest must return or end their trip early due to unavoidable circumstances (e.g., medical emergencies, natural disasters, or other verified reasons), the following refund policy will apply:
    • Notification and Verification: Guests must notify the management as soon as possible and provide supporting documentation if required.
    • Refund Policy: A full refund shall be issued for the remaining days of travel not utilized.
    • Processing Time: Refunds will be processed within 5 working days after the request is approved.

Note: If a guest return or end their trip early with avoidable circumstances (within control), the refund shall not be permitted.

Special Promotions or Packages: Reservations made under discounted rates, promotional offers, or packages may be subject to stricter cancellation and refund terms.

  • Rescheduling Option

Instead of canceling, travelers may opt to reschedule their trip within a specified period, subject to availability. Rescheduling fees may be waived in genuine emergency cases.

  1. Third-Party Services

Refunds for third-party services (e.g., airlines, hotels) will depend on their company policies. We will assist travelers in negotiating with these providers.

We strongly recommend travelers purchase comprehensive travel insurance to cover unexpected emergencies.

  1. Exclusions

The following situations are not covered under this policy:

  • Cancellations due to a change of mind.
  • Pre-existing conditions were not disclosed at the time of booking.
  • Delays or cancellations caused by personal negligence.
  1. Changes to the Itinerary
  • The company reserves the right to modify the itinerary due to unforeseen circumstances, including weather, safety concerns, or government restrictions.
  • Substitutions of similar value will be provided where possible.
  1. Inclusions and Exclusions
  • Inclusions: Specify items such as accommodation, meals, transportation, visa fees, Sustainable Development Fees (SDF), guided tours, etc as specified in the tour package. The capacity of the vehicle includes guide and driver. 
  • Exclusions: Costs like personal expenses, travel insurance, and additional services not listed in the package. Room upgrade & change of hotels available on extra cost. 
  1. Travel Insurance
  • Travelers are required to purchase comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies, trip cancellations, loss of belongings, and personal liability.

  • The company is not liable for any:
    • Loss, injury, or damage to personal property.
    • Delays, cancellations, or disruptions caused by third-party service providers, natural disasters, or unforeseen events.
  1. Traveler Responsibilities
  • Ensure passports, visas, and other travel documents are valid and up to date. The passport must have a minimum validity of 6 months from the intended date of departure from Bhutan.
  • Comply with local laws, customs, and regulations during the tour.
  • Notify the company of any special requirements, such as dietary restrictions or medical needs, at the time of booking.

  • Travelers must ensure they are medically fit for the tour.
  • It is the traveler’s responsibility to consult a doctor before traveling, if necessary.
  1. Force Majeure
  • The company is not responsible for any failure to deliver services due to acts of God, war, pandemics, strikes, or other circumstances beyond its control.
  1. Photography and Marketing
  • The company reserves the right to use photographs and videos taken during the tour for promotional purposes. Travelers can opt-out by informing the company in writing before the tour begins.
  1. Dispute Resolution
  • Any dispute arising out, which cannot be amicably settled between the parties, shall be referred to adjudication in accordance with the laws of Bhutan.
  1. Acceptance of Terms
  • By booking, travelers confirm they have read, understood, and agreed to these terms and conditions.
