DAY 01: Arrival in Paro and Drive to Thimphu (1.5 hours)

 Journey to Thimphu (1.5 hours)

From Paro, we embark on a scenic 1.5-hour drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s charming capital city. The route follows the Paro River to Chuzom, where it merges with the Thimphu River, guiding us to the heart of Thimphu. Along the highway, enjoy stunning views of landmarks and villages, such as the Paro Airport Birds Eye Viewpoint, Bondey, Shaba, and Isuna, before passing through Thimphu’s welcoming gate.

  • Highlights Along the National Highway:
  • Paro Airport Birds Eye Viewpoint: Begin your journey with a stop here for breathtaking panoramic views of Paro Airport, Rinpung Dzong, Ta Dzong (National Museum), the Paro Chu (River), and the stunning Paro Valley.
  • Tachogang Lhakhang: Pause for a short walk across the Paro River or enjoy stunning roadside views, depending on your arrival time.
  • Chuzom: This tri-junction marks the confluence of the Paro and Thimphu rivers and connects highways to Thimphu, Paro, Haa, and Phuentsholing. Take a moment to admire the portraits of Bhutan’s King and Queen at this iconic spot.

Day 02: Thimphu Sightseeing

Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, is a unique blend of modernity and tradition, where commerce, religion, and government intersect. The city is known for being the only capital in the world without traffic lights, with officers managing traffic during peak hours. Despite its modern amenities, including restaurants, shopping centers, and internet cafes, Thimphu retains its rich cultural heritage.

  • Buddha Point

Begin the day with a visit to the Buddha Dordenma statue, located in Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park, offers panoramic views of Thimphu valley.

  • National Memorial Chorten

Then, head to the National Memorial Chorten, built in the memory of the Third King of Bhutan, this temple is an iconic monument where visitors often see Bhutanese people circumambulating. It honors the king, regarded as the father of modern Bhutan and the temple is dedicated for the world peace.

  • Folk Heritage Museum

Established in 2001, this museum offers insights into Bhutanese culture, offering a glimpse of how people lived in remote areas of the country.

  • School of Arts and Crafts

The School of Arts and Crafts is another stop, where students master 13 traditional Bhutanese art techniques. You can witness live carvings, paintings, and sculptures. The school’s products are also available for sale.

  • Textile Museum

Visit the Textile Museum Opened in 2001, this museum showcases Bhutan’s weaving traditions, with exhibitions on weaving techniques, local dress styles, and textiles made by men and women. Items for sale are labeled with the weaver’s name and price.

  • Archery Matches at Changlimithang

Bhutan’s national sport, archery, is a thrilling experience to witness archery matches at Changlimithang, hitting targets from an impressive distance of 145 meters.

Day 03: Thimphu to Punakha (2-hour drive)

In the morning, embark on a scenic drive to Punakha, the former capital of Bhutan until the reign of the second king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Punakha, with its warm climate and rich history, is a perfect blend of nature, culture, and spirituality.

  • Dochula Pass

Stop at the picturesque Dochula Pass, offering stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the snowcapped Himalayan ranges. The pass is adorned with 108 chortens, known as Druk Wangyal Chortens, which add to its serene and spiritual ambiance. This is an ideal spot for photography and quiet reflection.

  • Chimi Lhakhang (The Temple of Fertility)

Just a few kilometers below Dochula lies Chimi Lhakhang, a temple built in 1499 to honor Drukpa Kuenley, popularly known as The Divine Madman. Renowned for his unorthodox and playful methods of teaching Buddhism, he is celebrated for his use of humor and sexual symbolism. Couples from around the world visit this temple to pray for fertility and blessings. The short hike through the rice fields and charming village of Mesina offers a delightful rural experience.

After lunch, continue your exploration:

  • Punakha Dzong

Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, an architectural masterpiece built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Also known as Druk Pungthang Dechen Phodrang (Palace of Great Happiness), it is strategically located at the confluence of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers. The dzong served as the seat of government until the mid-20th century and remains the winter residence of the Je Khenpo (chief abbot). Its intricate woodwork, grand courtyards, and rich history make it one of Bhutan’s finest and most photogenic dzongs.

  • Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Monastery

Embark on a gentle hike to the beautiful Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Monastery, built by Her Majesty Queen Mother Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck. The monastery, perched on a hill, offers panoramic views of the lush Punakha valley and is an exquisite example of Bhutanese architecture and art.

In the evening, enjoy a leisurely walk across Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge (160m), which spans the Pho Chu River. The bridge offers stunning views of the Punakha valley, terraced fields, and flowing rivers, making it a memorable experience.

Day 04: Punakha to Gangtey and Phobjikha Valley

In the morning, drive to the serene and picturesque Gangtey and Phobjikha Valley, two of Bhutan’s most stunning destinations.

  • Wangdue Phodrang Dzong (En Route)

Make a brief stop to admire the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, perched on a ridge overlooking the convergence of the Punakha and Dang Chu rivers. Though partially damaged by fire, the dzong retains its historic significance and is an important landmark in the region.

Note: The valley is divided into two parts—the upper region known as Gangtey and the lower region called Phobjikha.

  • Gangtey Monastery (Gangtey Gompa)

Visit the iconic Gangtey Gompa monastery, perched on a hilltop with panoramic views of the scenic Phobjikha Valley. Built in 1613 by Gyaltse Pema Thinley, this monastery is one of the most important Nyingmapa monasteries in Bhutan. Every winter, the Black-Necked Crane Festival is held here to celebrate the arrival of the rare and sacred, black-necked cranes.

  • Crane Information Center

Explore the Crane Information Center, which provides fascinating insights into the migratory, black-necked cranes that visit the valley from Tibet during the winter months. The center features educational exhibits, videos, and a viewing area where you can observe these majestic birds in their natural habitat.

In the evening, take a leisurely walk through the beautiful Phobjikha Valley, surrounded by sweeping meadows, pristine forests, and traditional Bhutanese villages. The valley’s peaceful ambiance and unspoiled beauty make it an ideal place for relaxation and reflection. Keep an eye out for black-necked cranes if visiting during the winter season.

Day 05: Phobjikha to Thimphu

In the morning, embark on a scenic drive back to Thimphu, Bhutan’s vibrant capital city. Along the way, enjoy occasional stops to capture breathtaking landscapes, traditional villages, and scenic views of the countryside. The journey offers numerous opportunities for photography and appreciating the serene beauty of Bhutan’s lush valleys and rolling hills.

In the afternoon, explore Thimphu’s cultural and recreational highlights:

  • Archery Match at Changlimithang Stadium

Visit Changlimithang Stadium to witness Bhutan’s national sport, archery, in action. Archery matches here are lively and entertaining, featuring skilled archers, traditional songs, and celebratory dances. This experience provides a glimpse into Bhutanese tradition and community spirit.

  • Shopping in Thimphu

Enjoy free time for shopping in Thimphu’s local markets and handicraft stores. Browse for traditional Bhutanese items such as hand-woven textiles, Buddhist Thangka paintings, wooden masks, jewelry, and local souvenirs. The markets offer an excellent opportunity to purchase authentic handicrafts and unique mementos to take home.

Stroll through Thimphu’s bustling streets, where modernity and tradition harmoniously coexist, and explore cozy cafes, local food stalls, and artisanal shops.

Day 06: Thimphu to Paro

In the morning, drive to Paro, a picturesque valley rich in history, culture, and natural beauty.

  • Ta Dzong (National Museum of Bhutan)

Begin your day with a visit to Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower that now serves as the National Museum of Bhutan. The museum houses a fascinating collection of Bhutanese artifacts, including traditional masks, thangkas (Buddhist paintings), ancient weapons, textiles, and natural history exhibits, offering a comprehensive insight into Bhutan’s heritage.

  • Rinpung Dzong

Next, visit Rinpung Dzong, also known as Paro Dzong, built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. This iconic fortress-monastery is an outstanding example of Bhutanese architecture and craftsmanship, featuring intricate woodwork, massive stone walls, and serene courtyards. It also houses the district monastic body and government offices. The walk across the wooden cantilever bridge leading to the dzong provides excellent photo opportunities.

In the afternoon, embark on an excursion to:

  • Chele La Pass (3,988 meters): Drive to Chele La Pass, the highest motorable road in Bhutan. From the pass, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks, including Mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. The area is especially beautiful in spring when colorful rhododendrons and wildflowers are in bloom. Chele La also provides a refreshing escape into Bhutan’s pristine natural landscape.

On the way back to Paro:

  • Kila Gompa Nunnery: Visit Kila Gompa, a serene cliffside nunnery housing around 90 nuns. Dating back to the 9th century, it originally served as a meditation center and remains a place of peaceful retreat and spiritual practice. The hike to the nunnery, surrounded by pine forests and stunning mountain views, offers a tranquil and enriching experience.

Day 07: Paro – Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery

In the morning, drive to Satsam Chorten, the starting point of the hike to the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang). The hike takes approximately 2 hours one way, ascending through beautiful pine forests, with glimpses of prayer flags fluttering in the breeze and distant views of the monastery clinging dramatically to a cliff.

  • Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang): Arguably the most photographed and iconic monument in Bhutan, Paro Taktsang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the highlight of your 8-day Bhutan itinerary. It is believed that Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) flew to this sacred site on the back of a tigress to subdue evil spirits and meditate, making it one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in Bhutan. The view of the monastery perched 900 meters above the valley floor is breathtaking and truly unforgettable.

After descending and a short rest, enjoy lunch in Paro before continuing your exploration:

  • Drukgyel Dzong: Visit the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to commemorate Bhutan’s victory over Tibetan invaders. Though destroyed by fire in the early 20th century, its historic significance and strategic location offer a glimpse into Bhutan’s storied past. On clear days, you can enjoy a spectacular view of Mount Jomolhari from this site.
  • Kichu Lhakhang: Proceed to Kichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Bhutan. Built in 659 AD by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, it is part of the 108 temples he constructed across the Himalayan region to subdue a powerful ogress. Kichu Lhakhang holds immense spiritual importance and showcases ancient Bhutanese artistry. Its twin temple, Jambay Lhakhang, is located in Bumthang.

In the evening, visit a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse to experience authentic Bhutanese culture and hospitality. Enjoy the warm, rustic charm of the farmhouse and learn about the daily lives of local farmers. You may also opt for a hot stone bath, a traditional Bhutanese therapeutic experience (optional and subject to arrangement).

Day 08: End of the Tour

As your journey in the Kingdom of Bhutan comes to an end, enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your hotel, reflecting on the rich cultural experiences, breathtaking landscapes, and warm Bhutanese hospitality that marked your visit.

After breakfast, your guide and driver will escort you to Paro International Airport for your departure. Along the way, take in the final glimpses of Paro’s picturesque valley, leaving you with lasting memories of this serene and enchanting land.

  1. Cancellation & Refund Policy
  • Cancellations must be communicated in writing.
  • Cancellation fees:
    • If the cancellation is before 45 days: 90% shall be refunded. Wire transfer charges shall be applicable as per the Bank.
    • If the cancellation is between 30-45 days: 75% shall be refunded. Wire transfer charges shall be applicable as per the Bank.
    • If the cancellation is between 20-30 days: 50% shall be refunded. Wire transfer charges shall be applicable as per the Bank.
    • If the cancellation is less than 20 days:  No refund, however date change request shall be permitted.
  1. Emergency Tour Cancellation Policy

At Echoes Tours & Travels, we understand that unforeseen emergencies can disrupt even the most well-planned trips. To accommodate such situations, we have established the following policy:

  • Definition of Emergency

An emergency is defined as an unavoidable and unforeseen circumstance that prevents travel. This may include:

  • Medical emergencies involving the traveler or immediate family.
  • Natural disasters affect the traveler’s location or destination.
  • Death in the immediate family.
  • Government-issued travel bans or restrictions.
  • Notification of Cancellation

Travelers must notify us as soon as possible in case of an emergency. Notification can be made through:

To process an emergency cancellation, supporting documentation must be provided, such as:

  • Medical certificate or hospital records.
  • Death certificate.
  • Official notice of travel bans or restrictions.

In case of a death in the family, we require a cancellation email and a copy of the death certificate to process the refund.

  • Land Services: A 100% refund will be provided, minus applicable bank transfer charges.
  • No Show: Refunds are not possible for no-shows after arrival.

Similarly, in case of serious illness or accidents, we require a cancellation email and hospital medical documents for verification to process the refund.

  • Early Departure Due to Unavoidable Circumstances:
  • If a guest must return or end their trip early due to unavoidable circumstances (e.g., medical emergencies, natural disasters, or other verified reasons), the following refund policy will apply:
    • Notification and Verification: Guests must notify the management as soon as possible and provide supporting documentation if required.
    • Refund Policy: A full refund shall be issued for the remaining days of travel not utilized.
    • Processing Time: Refunds will be processed within 5 working days after the request is approved.

Note: If a guest return or end their trip early with avoidable circumstances (within control), the refund shall not be permitted.

Special Promotions or Packages: Reservations made under discounted rates, promotional offers, or packages may be subject to stricter cancellation and refund terms.

  • Rescheduling Option

Instead of canceling, travelers may opt to reschedule their trip within a specified period, subject to availability. Rescheduling fees may be waived in genuine emergency cases.

  1. Third-Party Services

Refunds for third-party services (e.g., airlines, hotels) will depend on their company policies. We will assist travelers in negotiating with these providers.

We strongly recommend travelers purchase comprehensive travel insurance to cover unexpected emergencies.

  1. Exclusions

The following situations are not covered under this policy:

  • Cancellations due to a change of mind.
  • Pre-existing conditions were not disclosed at the time of booking.
  • Delays or cancellations caused by personal negligence.
  1. Changes to the Itinerary
  • The company reserves the right to modify the itinerary due to unforeseen circumstances, including weather, safety concerns, or government restrictions.
  • Substitutions of similar value will be provided where possible.
  1. Inclusions and Exclusions
  • Inclusions: Specify items such as accommodation, meals, transportation, visa fees, Sustainable Development Fees (SDF), guided tours, etc as specified in the tour package. The capacity of the vehicle includes guide and driver. 
  • Exclusions: Costs like personal expenses, travel insurance, and additional services not listed in the package. Room upgrade & change of hotels available on extra cost.

  • Travelers are required to purchase comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies, trip cancellations, loss of belongings, and personal liability.

  • The company is not liable for any:
    • Loss, injury, or damage to personal property.
    • Delays, cancellations, or disruptions caused by third-party service providers, natural disasters, or unforeseen events.
  1. Traveler Responsibilities
  • Ensure passports, visas, and other travel documents are valid and up to date. The passport must have a minimum validity of 6 months from the intended date of departure from Bhutan.
  • Comply with local laws, customs, and regulations during the tour.
  • Notify the company of any special requirements, such as dietary restrictions or medical needs, at the time of booking.

  • Travelers must ensure they are medically fit for the tour.
  • It is the traveler’s responsibility to consult a doctor before traveling, if necessary.
  1. Force Majeure
  • The company is not responsible for any failure to deliver services due to acts of God, war, pandemics, strikes, or other circumstances beyond its control.
  1. Photography and Marketing
  • The company reserves the right to use photographs and videos taken during the tour for promotional purposes. Travelers can opt-out by informing the company in writing before the tour begins.
  1. Dispute Resolution
  • Any dispute arising out, which cannot be amicably settled between the parties, shall be referred to adjudication in accordance with the laws of Bhutan.
  1. Acceptance of Terms
  • By booking, travelers confirm they have read, understood, and agreed to these terms and conditions.
